Emeco AlumiNEWS October 2007

Her jade eyes flashed at me through the Tokyo haze at the Hotel Okura Bar. Willie the barman shook a cocktail like a conga player from Ricky Ricardo’s band.

"Aluminum," I said.
"Strong. Light weight. Corrosion-proof," she whispered. She knew.
"Since 1944," I added.
A remembrance crossed her painted lips. It always does.
"But tell me about Gregg," she asked, finally. They always do.
And so I told her.

His meager childhood in the Utah desert, his three "moms". The "apprenticeship" with Mitt and then the years on the international surfing circuit. Finally his stratospheric rise in the Design World. Careening though the Manhattan canyons on Starck’s bike, sharing chicken soup with Frank, clowning around with Lord F. The mid-night pasta dinners with Ettore.

"He’s so..." she paused.
"Strong. Light weight. Corrosion-proof?" I offered. It was all I had.

Emeco’s all-aluminum zeppelin has been cris-crossing the globe. Once again, Arflex Japan gave Emeco an incredible moment to shine. Elegant exhibits, sublime showrooms and a savvy staff all contributed to a successful launch of the 20-06 collection in Tokyo and Osaka. In London, our Brand Guru’s at Wieden + Kennedy created a memorable display for Tent London (part of 100% Design) with a 1,000 anchor sitting atop a 20-06 chair and another chair floating off a weather balloon. A dozen of Emeco’s Finest (sales force) visited Hanover PA to tour the factory and enjoy the view from the revolving restaurant atop the aluminum-clad Emeco Tower. It was off to New York City to stay at the Hudson Hotel and experience the chill of the original Hudson chairs (one perfect polished chair in each room). Dinner at Morimoto, hosted by Gregg, was transcendent, and we got a preview of a new exhibition of Ettore Sottsass’ work from Chris Redfern, the project designer of the new chair.

Look for the Emeco all-aluminum Air Stream Camper as we visit Chicago, Minneapolis, LA and San Francisco this fall. Flag us down and we’ll give you a shiny new Emeco lapel pin.
