Plastic bottles can only be recycled so many times. By turning them into an iconic chair that is built to last, we keep them out of the waste stream for a very long time. The opposite of disposable.

When we started with 111 Navy in 2010, we used 111 waste plastic bottles per chair, hence the name. But after a decade of continuous engineering, we now upcycle at least 170 bottles per chair. Every little helps.

In 2006, Coca-Cola approached Emeco to help solve an environmental problem — “upcycling” waste plastic bottles into an iconic structural item, made to last. Emeco committed to the challenge, taking soft recycled PET plastic, originally intended for short-lived fabric and textiles, to build a tough, one-piece, scratch-resistant chair. The development process required both determination and patience. After four years, in 2010, the 111 Navy Chair was launched.
