1104 Navy by Emeco, 1954

Originally created as a library chair for the US Navy, the 1104 Navy adds a solid wood seat to our original aluminum Navy chair. Available in six solid wood finishes - all locally sourced from sustainably managed forests and handcrafted in collaboration with our Amish neighbors in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Seats in Accoya are for outdoor use. Standard glides: soft plastic TPU glides for all-around use, including outdoor. Alternative glides available at an upcharge. Please note that wood is a natural material, with variations in color and grain pattern to be expected.

Naturally iconic

In 1949, the US Government needed a high quality library chair. The 1104 Navy was born. The contoured, solid wood seat is handcrafted and fitted on a classic aluminum Navy frame. Sourced from local, sustainably managed forests, the wood is crafted in partnership with Amish woodworkers in neighboring Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

It wasn't about style

In the throes of WWII, the US Navy needed a place to sit.
They commissioned a chair that was lightweight, non-corrosive, fire resistant and "torpedo proof". Emeco took on the challenge. In 1944, the 1006 Navy Chair® was born. Built to mil-spec, tested to last 150 years, it's been in continuous production ever since. And we've continued to apply the same 77-step craft process to all our designs. Because, as it turns out, what worked for one demanding environment also suits many, many others.

Recycled aluminum

Emeco aluminum furniture is not just outdoor approved - it’s approved for marine applications, meaning it meets significantly higher standards for corrosion resistance to handle harsh salt-air environments. That’s what the US Navy demanded when we first started making mil-spec chairs for ships and submarines in 1944, and that’s how we still make them.

Our signature hand brushed finish is anodized. Unlike paint or plating, which sit on top of the metal, the anodization is integrated with the material itself. The electrolytic process thickens the natural, protective oxide layer of the recycled aluminum, converting the surface into a super hard wearing, scratch resistant, all-weather aluminum oxide, next to the hardness of a diamond.
