The original. The 1006 Navy Chair® was originally created in 1944 for the US Navy as a lightweight, non-corrosive, fire resistant and super strong chair for ships and submarines. Still built by hand from 80% recycled aluminum in Hanover, Pennsylvania. Outdoor approved. Small carbon footprint. Guaranteed for life. Standard glides: soft plastic TPU glides for all-around use, including outdoor use. Alternative glides available at an upcharge.

Story

It wasn't about style.

In the throes of WWII, the US Navy needed a place to sit.
They commissioned a chair that was lightweight, non-corrosive, fire resistant and "torpedo proof". Emeco took on the challenge. In 1944, the 1006 Navy Chair® was born. Built to mil-spec, tested to last 150 years, it's been in continuous production ever since. And as it turns out, what worked for one demanding environment also suits many, many others.

Emeco aluminum furniture is not just outdoor approved - it’s approved for marine applications, meaning it meets significantly higher standards for corrosion resistance to handle harsh salt-air environments. That’s what the US Navy demanded when we first started making mil-spec chairs for ships and submarines in 1944, and that’s how we still make them.

Our signature hand brushed finish is anodized. Unlike paint or plating, which sit on top of the metal, the anodization is integrated with the material itself. The electrolytic process thickens the natural, protective oxide layer of the recycled aluminum, converting the surface into a super hard wearing, scratch resistant, all-weather aluminum oxide, next to the hardness of a diamond.
